The pilgrimage to the ancient Ghriba synagogue on Tunisia’s resort island of Djerba began on Friday amid tight security, with hundreds of Jewish faithful expected, including Israelis.

The first pilgrims arrived at the sanctuary in the morning, an AFP journalist reported, for the start of an annual ritual that has seen numbers fall dramatically since an Al-Qaeda attack in 2002 and instability following Tunisia’s 2011 revolution.

Security reinforcements were deployed around Djerba, which lies 500 kilometres (300 miles) south of Tunis, with roadblocks set up along the road linking the airport to the tourist area and a police helicopter whirring overhead.

The pilgrimage is due to culminate in the afternoon with the traditional procession through the Jewish neighbourhoods around the synagogue, the oldest in Africa, with checkpoints set up at their entrance.

For the first time since the revolution in January 2011 several dozen Israelis are expected, said organiser Perez Trabelsi, who represents the Tunisian Jewish community at Djerba.

The event was cancelled two years ago with the country on edge after the mass uprising that toppled veteran strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, but it resumed discreetly in 2012 and no incidents were reported.

Beginning 33 days after the start of the Jewish Passover festival, the Ghriba pilgrimage used to attract thousands of pilgrims and tourists, but attendance slumped after a suicide attack claimed by Al-Qaeda killed 21 people in April 2002.

According to legend, the synagogue was founded in 586 BC by Jews fleeing the destruction of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem.

Tunisian Jews now numbers around 1,500, compared with an estimated 100,000 living in the north African country when it gained independence in 1956.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Hundreds of Christians marked Palm Sunday in the Holy Land, the start of the Catholic Holy Week that concludes with Passove Sunday ( Easter).

Crowds of faithful gathered at Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the traditional site of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. Many waved palm fronds to symbolize how worshippers greeted Jesus over 2,000 years ago as he triumphantly returned to Jerusalem.

Mostly Palestinian worshippers gathered in the Nativity Church in Bethlehem, traditional site of Jesus’ birth, clutching olive branches and bouquets as they sung in praise. The Biblical city of Bethlehem is in the West Bank, a territory east of Israel that Palestinians seek for their future state. Israel retains military control there but Palestinians have a measure of self-rule over their own communities, including Bethlehem.

There are some 50,000 Palestinian Christians, a tiny minority among a mostly Muslim society. They must obtain military permission to enter Jerusalem to participate in religious ceremonies.

In a statement sent to reporters, Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi said some 60 percent of Christian applicants in Bethlehem and the Palestinian West Bank town of Ramallah had their requests rejected. But military spokesman Guy Inbar said they had issued nearly 20,000 permits so far, and only rejected the applications of 190 Palestinians.

Apartheid state? Israeli Arab Christian wins popular singing show

In yet another example of just how silly are the claims that Israel is a racist apartheid state, 19-year-old Lina Mahoul, an Arab Christian from the northern town of Acre, became the second winner of Israel’s wildly popular singing competition show, The Voice.

Nearly every Israeli eye was glued to the television Saturday evening as Mahoul faced off against Ophir Ben Sheetrit, an Orthodox Jewish girl from Ashdod, in the final.

For those who believe Israel is a state that practices racism against its minorities, the choice should have been obvious. Of course the Jew would win! Those racist Israelis would never vote for an Arab!

How wrong such sentiments are, as proved on Saturday night, when Israelis voted overwhelmingly for Mahoul, who in turn played to her audience by performing a touching rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

During her final performance, Mahoul’s family and friends could be seen happily enjoying the moment surrounded by Jews. Again, not really a picture of apartheid.

It was also pointed out that the young Mahoul volunteers at Magen David Adom, the Israeli Jewish version of the Red Cross.

During a visit to a mosque in Cairo Iran‘s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was received by a shoe wielded by a Syrian national who wished to protest Tehran’s support for Syria‘s President Bashar Assad.

The Turkish news agency Anatolia posted a video of the attempted attack.

Outside the mosque, Ahmadinejad was welcomed by citizens holding signs and posters congratulating him on the first Iranian presidential visit since the Islamic revolution of 1979.

But the enthusiasm was not unanimously shared, as one Syrian national approached Ahmadinejad and attempted to strike him with a shoe, but was stopped by citizens and security services.

The man was removed from the area while shouting: “You’re the one who ruined Syria,” and was later arrested.

Protestors expressed their disapproval of the incident and stressed that objections to the presidential visit should not be performed in such manners, saying that “A guest ought to be respected.”

Ahmadinejad’s visit to al-Azhar, the highest religious institution in Egypt, was also not so well received, as several radical Muslim protestors blocked his path and prevented his and his entourage’s entry to the institution.

They hoisted signs condemning the visit and even demanded that Egypt’s ties with Iran be severed.

Earlier on Tuesday a prominent Salafi faction released a statement calling to bar Ahmadinejad from visiting mosques and other places important to Shiites.

The Salafis also asked to “confront Iran’s president regarding the persecution of Sunnis in his country and Iran’s support for Assad’s regime.”

Gal-On told Ynet, “I think that Meretz can triple its power today and even reach 10 mandates.” Voters will need to present either a valid ID card, passport or driver’s license.
