In a city that has rarely been celebrated for its progressive views toward women, St.-Sgt.- Maj. Alex Pekerman is a pioneer.

The daughter of a police officer raised in Jerusalem during the bloody second intifada, Pekerman, 27, is Jerusalem’s first female police bomb disposal specialist, and only one of two such women specialists in the country.

Moreover, she began her position just six months ago, when what many are deeming a third intifada first struck the city.

Acutely aware of this fact, Pekerman is not intimidated by the danger her job entails, or by any man not accustomed to working with a woman in the dangerous and macho field.

Pekerman’s immutable confidence stems from her exposure as a child to her father’s perilous profession as a veteran explosive disposal officer.

“I grew up during a very difficult period in Jerusalem, and was always aware of what was going on in terms of security, and what the police were doing to respond,” said Pekerman on a chilly and drizzly Wednesday afternoon at Jerusalem’s Russian Compound police headquarters.

“Throughout the years I was growing up in that kind of surrounding, and when I was thinking about what I wanted to do in the future, I found myself pulled toward the field of bomb disposal experts. And now, here I am.”

Asked if she harbors any fears about the literally explosive nature of her work, Pekerman’s response was immediate and unequivoc.

“No,” she responded. “You have to cut out the thought of fear. You have to focus on the work that has to be done – on the community and the people at risk – until you complete the task.”

And while that task has become exponentially more complicated and dangerous over the past several months of unpredictable violence, which has only recently began to ebb, Pekerman said passing a highly competitive and demanding training program has eliminated any self doubt.

“I went through an intensive sixmonth course in which only a limited number of people begin and complete each year,” she said. “Only approximately 10 candidates pass the exams that take place during the course each year. You are constantly tested.”

Outside the classroom, those tests are manifested through a variety of potentially dangerous, yet seemingly benign objects, including backpacks, purses, and unattended packages.

“We deal with suspicious objects and packages on a daily basis,” she said. “When I arrive at terrorist-related scenes, we have to make sure there is no short-term or long-term danger, and that the area is cordoned off. You have to make 100% certain there is no danger to the police officers at the scene, or the civilians nearby.”

Noting the present volatility of the capital, Pekerman said that a bomb disposal expert is always on hand at every public event to ensure “an immediate response, if necessary.”

“That’s my day-to-day reality,” she said.

During her off time, Pekerman said she decompresses by “just living a normal life,” by exercising, playing sports, and spending time with family and friends.

“You have to remember that it’s work,” she emphasized. “You have to complete the work and then move on, and be ready for the next day.”

With respect to dealing with the male perception of her, Pekerman described her experience as a mixed bag of intimidation and respect.

“Some of them are intimidated, and some of them are not,” she said.

“Some of them think that it is very scary that I am a strong woman and that I’m more knowledgeable than they are. Sometimes they think I’m more masculine than they are; but some of them think it’s really cool, and they want to know more about it.”

In the meantime, she said she is still getting used to peoples’ reactions at crime scenes when she takes her helmet off.

“When I’m at a scene dealing with a bomb and I’m in full gear, people can’t differentiate whether I’m a woman or a man,” she explained.

“They just see a bomb disposal expert. But as soon as I take my helmet off and they see my hair fall down and they realize I’m a woman, they have a slight and immediate shock.”

“A lot of people are immediately supportive and positively surprised,” she added. “It gives me a positive feeling.”

Indeed, Pekerman said the best part of her job is the response she elicits from the public after she arrives to ensure they remain safe.

“When there is a suspicious object, the public is concerned,” she said.

“Then, as soon as I arrive at the scene, the public fully understands that I’m in control of the situation by making the area safe. The sense of security that I give to people makes my day.”

Asked if the 2008 Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker – about the harrowing experiences of an emotionally unstable bomb disposal specialist during the Iraq War – had an impact on her, Pekerman smiled and nodded.

“I saw the movie for the first time when I got accepted into the bomb disposal course, and it was really exciting,” she said of the classic, directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

“But at the end of the course, I watched it again and I understood that there were a lot of things in the movie that were unrealistic as far as Israel is concerned. In Israel, we don’t work like the [protagonist]; we work very professionally and very safely to protect ourselves, and protect the surrounding areas where we work.”

Pekerman continued: “In the movie, it’s a war zone, and here we’re talking about a civilian population, which is completely different in many ways.”

To date, Pekerman has responded to multiple terrorist attacks, primarily outside the Old City, including several attacks on the same day.

“One day, we had three attacks in Jerusalem within two hours,” she recounted.

During any given attack, Pekerman said she and her team are meticulous in ensuring the terrorist is not carrying, or has surreptitiously planted, explosives in the surrounding area.

According to security officials, the base would be permanently manned and prepared for emergency situations

The United States is building a fortified American missile defense base in the center of Israel that would be permanently manned and would be prepared for emergency situations, security officials have said, Israeli news site Walla reported Thursday.

According to the officials, Walla reported, the base is in advanced stages of construction and will be connected to the radar facility at Dimona, which is operated by the US Army.

The report comes after the US and Israel participated in a bilateral military exercise in February.

The exercise, Juniper Cobra, was designed to improve the cooperation and coordination between the US European Command (USEUCOM) and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The exercise scenario that the two trained on was a simulation on ballistic missile defenses.

http://n44adshostnet.com/ads?key=6709bdf3e31af57d137f84278b6435b5&ch=405The last Juniper Cobra drill was held in Israel in May 2014 and focused on computer-simulated bilateral air defense exercises, the Jerusalem Post reported, and since then Israel has significantly enhanced its multi-layered air defense systems, including successfully intercepting a target in space using its Arrow 3 missile defense system in December.

Partly financed by the United States, the Arrow system was developed and produced by Israeli Aerospace Industries in partnership with Boeing.

Israel and the United States are currently finalizing another 10-year memorandum of understanding extending the defense assistance relationship. The current defense assistance agreement, due to lapse in 2018, provides Israel $3 billion a year in defense assistance.

A bitter public fight between Netanyahu and Obama shook a decades-old alliance. After acerbic clashes over the US-backed nuclear deal with Iran, the two leaders recently discussed a deal expected to be worth more than $30 billion which will include a string of advanced weaponry systems, officials said.

According to the reports in May, the two allies held talks around enhancing a previously negotiated deal to supply Israel with 33 F-35 aircraft, the first batch of which was expected next year.

Israel was also said to be asking for more Iron Dome batteries, additional assistance with the Arrow 3 missile system developed jointly by the US and Israel, and possibly, for the purchase of technological systems for intelligence gathering.

The US House of Representatives Armed Services Committee in May also approved $474 million for Israel’s anti-missile systems.

In October the Israeli and US Air Forces along with other allied nations took part in the bi-annual Blue Flag joint Air Force exercise.

http://n44adshostnet.com/ads?key=6709bdf3e31af57d137f84278b6435b5&ch=405The exercise took place at the ‘Ovda’ Air Force base in the Arabah and lasted for for two weeks and “creates a multi-national learning environment, including fictional countries, in which participants can practice planning and execution of large air force operations,”read a statement from the IDF Spokesperson Unit..

The Israel-led simulated combat exercise was a follow-up to a similar exercise two years ago, with the participation of the United States, Italian and Greek air forces. The purpose of that exercise was to rehearse a scenario involving “a high-intensity confrontation against a political entity with a strong army” – a goal set by the Israel Air Force in 2013.

Under US law, the American administration must act to maintain Israel’s military superiority over its neighbors.

Headlines Humanize Hamas Baby-Killer Terrorist

 Related:

  • Short-lived headlines by the Associated Press and other news outlets show indifference for Jewish victims of the Jerusalem Light Rail terror attack and sympathy for the Hamas terrorist.

The news spread fast when a Hamas terrorist plowed his car into a crowd of innocent civilians at the Jerusalem Light Rail. The murderous rampage, which Hamas has proudly praised, resulted in the death of three-month old Chaya Zisel Braun while seriously wounding nine others. What did the Associated Press (AP) and other media outlets like Yahoo News report in the wake of this terrible tragedy?

Israeli police shoot man in east Jerusalem.

Within minutes, other news sites picked up the story from AP and posted similarly inaccurate headlines.
As details of the attack became clear, many news outlets replaced the “short-lived” headlines within hours to read: “Palestinian kills baby at Jerusalem station” (The Associated Press) and “Palestinian rams car into Jerusalem crowd, killing baby” (Yahoo News).

Other media outlets, consistently known for showing anti-Israel bias, either failed to correct erroneous headlines or made corrections that still implied ambiguity about the nature of what happened. “Jerusalem driver shot after ramming pedestrians: police” (The French Associated Press) and “Jerusalem car ‘attack’ kills baby at rail station” (BBC).
The Associated Press blamed “lack of information” for their insensitive headline, saying:

“The headline in question was short-lived, written when confirmed details of what happened were scarce. The headline was replaced in just over a half hour as AP continued to publish updates about the incident, the driver and the victim. The final version of the story, and its headline, made clear what had happened.”

Other mainstream media offered no such explanations for their reporting bias, nor do they make any effort to report about Israel objectively despite claiming “journalistic objectivity” for humanizing terrorists and “telling their side of the story.”
The New York Times, a media outlet well-known for anti-Israel bias, got called out by American media watchdog CAMERA and criticized for redirecting “readers away from the facts of Palestinian violence to focus instead on Israel’s alleged misdeeds.” They called such one-sided reporting, “journalistic manipulation,” and accused the Times of “cherry-picking what facts to share with readers and how to frame them.”

Why Does The Mainstream News Bash Israel?

Reporting news based on the information available requires diligent fact gathering, some of which can be unclear when news breaks. However, too often we see a pattern of news reports casting Israel in a negative light while making every concession to Hamas terrorists.
For example, the Jerusalem Light Rail terrorist who murdered baby Chana Zisel Braun will be buried today in Jerusalem. What does the Yahoo News and Associated Press headline say?
    screenshot-news.yahoo.com 2014-10-26 14-13-11
Notice that the word “terrorist” is nowhere in the headline, and the article makes every possible attempt to avoid calling what happened an attack:

“Tensions have been rising ahead of Sunday night’s funeral for Abdelrahman Shaludi, the Palestinian who drove into a Jerusalem crowd on Wednesday, killing a three-month-old girl and wounding six others.”

No use of the word “attack”.
No mention of the driver as a “terrorist”.
Not even a reference to the fact that the driver was a member of Hamas who celebrated and praised his actions and encouraged others to use their cars to kill Jewish babies (see the media campaign on Facebook by Hamas news agency Shehab).

News reports that strip out reference to attackers as terrorists and try to cast doubt about the nature of the attack want to turn public opinion against Israel.
The press treats terror attacks more fairly in countries other than Israel, such as the recent terrorist attacks in Canada and the hatchet attack by a Muslim extremist against two New York City policemen. The word “attack” is not put in quotation marks. Conclusions that perpetrators were in fact “terrorists” are not played down or cast in doubt.
The mainstream news media reserves such scorn for terror attacks that happen in Israel. Those of us who stand United with Israel should do all we can to expose and protest against such media bias.
What do you think about how the media handled reporting of the Jerusalem Light Rail Terror Attack, especially compared to coverage of other recent terror attacks?

    A team of Israeli
Messianic Jews and Arab Christians have been assisting Syrian war
refugees. The group recently visited a church where 219 refugees
families (over 700 people) were taking shelter after fleeing from ISIS
    and other Islamist groups.
“These people lost everything,” says one member of the Israeli group, whose names need to be protected. “They even saw family members murdered or kidnapped.”The Arab and Jewish team are working together with local Christians
who are doing what they can to care for the needs of the multitudes of
children who have been devastated by the war. The team brought a large
financial gift from the Body of Christ in Israel, Jews and Arabs who
wanted to reach out to the Syrians in a practical way.
“We brought milk for children, diapers, jackets, warm clothes,
toys and candy; we purchased heaters and blankets, small cooking stoves
and cooking pans. What a joy to see the faces of the young ones that
walked around barefoot, having lost everything, receiving new sandals,”
    the team member recalls.
In addition to the practical humanitarian needs, they are also
supporting educational opportunities for the multitudes of displaced
children, including Bible teachings. “We do not want to pass the pain to our children,” said a local Arab Christian working with the refugees.
Many of the refugees the team has helped are educated people with
good professions who lost everything. They told us about Mohammed (not
his real name), a successful businessman originally from the Syrian side
    of the Golan Heights.
The Israeli team recounted Mohammed’s own story, which is representative of thousands of Syrian refugees, thus:“Due to the war, he had to relocate several times during the past
3 years, but eventually had to run for his life with his family to
Jordan. While attending a funeral of one of the young men from his
village with 3000 people, a missile hit the crowd and Mohammed found
himself lying over the dead bodies of 403 people, 15 of them members of
    his extended family.
“Mohammed, his 4 daughters and 3 sons, a daughter-in-law and
several grandsons then walked the cold desert to cross into Jordan, all
while facing death threats. [During the journey], some of their number
were killed by wild animals. A pregnant woman had to deliver her baby in
the freezing cold desert. They burned their jackets to make a fire to
keep the new born baby warm. Hope was waning.
Desperately, Mohammed left his family alone in the dark, cold
desert and walked for five hours until he reached a Jordanian army
border post, which provided assistance bringing his family into the
country. A month later, we visited the family and brought them jackets
to replace those they had burned. We shared the Gospel with them and
    prayed for the family.
The team also visited a church that was filled with refugees, reporting:“They slept in the pews, offices and every available place. The
church has rented a wedding hall for the people to live in. What
dedicated people that understand what is happening is an opportunity
rather then a curse! We were able to help with medications for a medical
team that travels and takes care of refugees in different places.”
At one point, several refugees became angry when a team member identified as a Messianic Jew began to speak to them. “But then I saw many people getting touched and crying,” said the Messianic believer. “Many
of the people came and said, ‘When you first started to share, we
wanted to kill you, but now we know that Jesus is real and want to
    accept Him has our Lord.’”

“I’ve never seen a church full of Muslim women wearing the hijab,” said the Israeli team leader. “We
could see the joy in the eyes of frightened children as we ministered
to them. We saw hunger for the truth as people started to question
    Islam.”

IDF, Shin Bet kill three senior Hamas commanders
Raed al-Attar and Mohammed Abu Shmallah were both behind the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit, as well as many other terror attacks on the southern Gaza border.

While the fate of top Hamas commander Mohammed Deif remains unclear after an assassination attempt, the organization’s military wing said Thursday that Israel killed three of its senior commanders – Rafah Division commander Raed al-Attar, Southern Division commander Mohammed Abu Shmallah and Rafah Division senior commander Mohammed Barhoum in an overnight strike.

Al-Attar was involved in the planning and commanded the operation to kidnap IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, while Abu Shmallah was also involved in the planning of the operation.

he Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigade said the three were killed in a 2:30am bombing of a house in the Tel al-Sultan refugee camp west of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Seven other people were killed and 25 others wounded in the attack.

The targeted killing was a joint operation of the Shin Bet and IDF. The Shin Bet confirmed the killing of al-Attar and Abu Shmallah, but not Barhoum’s.

Abu Shmallah, 41, and al-Attar, 40, were two of the most senior commanders in the al-Qassam Brigades.

Al-Attar the Hamas Division commander in southern Gaza, was one of the architects of the terror tunnel project in the south of the Strip, and also aided other Hamas divisions with tunneling.

He was one of the founders of Hamas’ elite Nukhba unit and was in charge of arms smuggling from the Sinai Peninsula.

Al-Attar was behind a series of terror attacks in recent years, among them:

    • The 1994 murder of an IDF officer in Rafah. Al-Attar was part of the terror cell that committed the attack.
    • He planned and executed a terrorist bombing at the IDF’s Tarmit post on the Philadelphi Corridor in September 2001. Four soldiers were wounded in the attack and extensive damage was caused to the post.
    • He planned an attack on the IDF’s Africa post on the Philadelphi Corridor in January 2002, in which 4 IDF soldiers were killed.
    • He planned and commanded the attack in Kerem Shalom in June 2006, during which 2 IDF soldiers were killed and IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was kidnapped.

Al-Attar was one of the closest people to Hamas’ second-in-command Ahmed Jabari, whose assassination by the IDF and Shin Bet in November of 2012 served as the opening shot for Operation Pillar of Defense.

Al-Attar was in charge of launching many Hamas terror cells who committed terror attacks in Sinai against Egyptian targets. He was considered a natural replacement for Mohammed Deif as the head of Hamas’ armed wing, amid reports Deif was killed by Israel on Tuesday night

Shmallah, the most senior commander in southern Gaza, was in charge of the Rafah and Khan Younis area. He survived previous assassination attempts.

He began his terror activity along with al-Attar and Mohammed Deif in the early 90’s. Since then, he was directly involved in the execution of dozens of terrorist attacks, among them:

    • The 1994 murder of an IDF officer in Rafah.
    • Terror tunnel attacks in 2004 that claimed the lives of six IDF soldiers, 10 others were wounded.
    • The 2008 attack in Kerem Shalom in which 13 soldiers were wounded when jeeps laden with explosives blew up at the crossing.

He was also behind the June 2006 attack in the Kerem Shalom area, in which two soldiers were killed and IDF soldier Gilad Shalit was kidnapped.

During Operation Protective Edge, Abu Shmallah was involved in the infiltration of 13 Hamas terrorists through a tunnel.

Mohammed Barhoum spent many years in Syria and Libya, and was responsible for the transfer of money to Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri threatened Israel would pay the price for the assassination, calling it “a massive Israeli crime.”

The assassinations “only increase (the Palestinians’) determination to carry the flag and keep going,” a statement from Hamas said.

Using precision guided missiles, Israeli forces are able to pinpoint targets to size of a window; troops discover Hamas military gear in tunnels.

The IDF has continued pounding targets in Gaza throughout Wednesday and the previous night. Targets included 5 mosques which were being used by Hamas for militant purposes. Army sources revealed one to have been used as a command center while another was employed as an observation point to track Israeli troop movements.

sraeli naval forces have relentlessly struck targets on the Gaza Strip’s coastal west with guided cruise missiles launched at sea. The missiles can be guided and relay video footage showing IDF personnel guiding the missiles at specific buildings and even designated points such as a window.

Netanyahu: IDF will complete tunnel destruction, with or without a truce

Despite resolute words, prime minister lowers expectations, saying ‘there’s no 100% guarantee’ all tunnels will be destroyed.

    Itay Blumental
    Published: 07.31.14, 13:36 / Israel News

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed on Thursday that he would not accept any ceasefire proposal that does not allow the IDF to complete the destruction of terror tunnels.

“As of now, we have neutralized dozens of terrorist tunnels and we are determined to complete this mission, with or without a ceasefire,” Netanyahu said at Thursday’s government meeting, during which ten rockets were fired at Sderot.

“Therefore I will not agree to any proposal that does not allow the IDF to complete this work which is important for the security of Israel’s citizens

“The IDF is continuing to act with full force across the Gaza Strip. IDF soldiers are completing the neutralization of the terrorist tunnels. These tunnels would have enabled Hamas to abduct and murder civilians and IDF soldiers via simultaneous attacks from many tunnels that penetrate our territory. We are now dismantling this ability,” he said.
“Hamas has taken harsh blows from the IDF and ISA. We have struck hard at thousands of terrorist targets: Command centers, rocket arsenals, production facilities, launch areas and hundreds of terrorists have been killed,” he continued.

The IDF estimated on Wednesday that accomplishing that task, already into its fourth week, would take several more days.

Despite his resolute words, Netanyahu also made sure to lower expectations: “I said at the start of the campaign: There is no guarantee

of 100% success, just as Iron Dome does not provide a complete answer, but the IDF actions have impressive results in the field and these actions are continuing at full strength even now.”
Leaving open the option of widening a ground campaign in the Hamas Islamist-dominated Gaza Strip, the IDF called up an additional 16,000 reservists. A military source said they would relieve a similar number of reserve soldiers being stood down.

The prime minister also passed criticism at some of the government ministers.

“There is a minority among the public which, precisely at these times, chooses to take a more extreme position on this or that side. I say to you: Do not harm the special unity that we have. Mind your words and be careful with your deeds. And, more than anything, government ministers must serve as personal examples for the public at large. At this time, the nation expects all of us, especially government ministers, to unite behind the goal,” he said.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon noted the IDF has killed hundreds of Hamas terrorists in different ranks.

“We know Hamas and the other terror organizations are hiding the large number of their dead terrorists,” he said, noting one should not believe statements from Hamas claiming the contrary. “The reality and the facts on the ground are that Hamas is paying a very heavy price.”

IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz said that while the army’s fighting in difficult areas, “the troops are handling the missions they’re given excellently and continue with determination.”

Syrian army threatens to destroy one the most ancient synagogues in the world

Mohammed Kanaan, a senior in the Syrian opposition, warned Wednesday that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s army is attacking the Jobar suburb in Damascus indiscriminately and there was a growing concern that the ancient temple may be destroyed during the attacks.

He called on the relevant international organizations, notably UNESCO, to step in and save it. The “Elijah the Prophet” synagogue is considered to be one of the most ancient synagogues in the world. (Roi Kais)

Some 150 Israeli Arabic-speaking Christians on Sunday demonstrated outside the European Union mission in Tel Aviv, demanding that the international community stop nitpicking against Israel and start combatting the severe persecution of Christians everywhere else in the Middle East.

“Nations, organizations and international missions are quick to raise an accusing finger against Israel at every opportunity,” said Father Gabriel Nadaf, spiritual father of the Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum, which organized the rally.

Those same nations and organizations “don’t life a finger against the ethnic cleansing of Christians in the Middle East,” the priest continued.

Father Nadaf went on to explain that from Syria to Egypt to Iraq to the Palestinian Authority, Christians on a daily basis suffer intimidation, harassment, desecration, coercion, torture, rape, physical abuse and murder. “According to the statistics, a Christian is murdered every five minutes [in the Middle East], and the Western world is silent about this,” he lamented.

In messages posted to its Facebook page during the Tel Aviv rally, the Israeli Christian Recruitment Forum insisted that “there is no place but Israel that is safe for Christians in the Middle East!”

While the rally was largely ignored by the mainstream Western media, the Israeli press took great interest, and forum spokesman Shadi Khalloul, a veteran of the IDF, was interviewed by various television and print media outlets.

Khalloul has spoken numerous times with Israel Today regarding the Christian awakening within Israel, and the bonds of brotherhood than bind local Christians to the Jewish people and the Jewish state.

Last month, Israel’s Knesset took the first important step toward recognizing local Christians as an independent minority separate from the Arab Muslims. Both Nadaf and Khalloul say this is necessary, since local Christians were here before the Arab Muslim conquest around 600 AD.

A growing number of Israelis, including lawmakers and opinion shapers, are likewise waking up to the strong Christian minority in their midst, a minority that has been long neglected, but which is now beginning to boldly take its place alongside the Jews.
